Hi, my name is Mario Roberto Salcido, and I'm a freelance multimedia designer.
I have eleven years experience in film and video production and desktop publishing.
I'm here to talk to you today about how to start your own design company. Some of the basic things that you will need in order to start up a design company is a computer, an office to work in.
The very first step that you should make is to come up with a logo, your own personal design that represents your firm. When you design your own logo, it's important to do research and just basically look at other logos that are out there, see what competitors are putting out there, what they've developed because the last thing that you need is to catch heat from another firm because your logo resembles theirs or whatnot or to be easily confused with someone else.
The second step you want to make when you are putting together your own design company is you want to go out and basically meet people, interact with different companies, owners, business owners, go to events, go to charitable events, talk to different people. Once you get to known them on a personal level usually some of the best ways that you will get work is through a network. You know, once people feel comfortable with you and they get to know you and they see your talent, they see your portfolio, they'll usually end up giving you a call.
Now, when you are going out looking for these clients, it's always important to go with step three or step two depending on how you want to look at it to always have a good solid portfolio of work to take with you when you go looking for these jobs. It doesn't have to be anything really extensive. I mean a lot, most people understand that you are either starting out or you don't have as much experience as other established firms do, however, if you show that you are knowledgeable enough and that you do have the desired skills to pull off their workload, the majority of the times they'll take a chance with you.
My name is Mario Roberto Salcido, and thank you very much for watching this video.
